چکیده

INTRODuCTION Genetic markers provide information about allelic variation at a given locus. The increasing availability of molecular markers in farm animals allows the detailed analyses and evaluation of genetic diversity and furthermore the detection of genes influencing economically important traits. The majority of molecular markers used nowadays with high-throughput systems are microsatellite markers (simple tandem repeat, STR). Variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, single strand conformation polymorphisms (SSCPs), restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) and amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) markers are not commonly applied in farm animals. Additionally within diversity and phylogeny studies specific mtDNA and Y chromosome markers are used for the identification of maternal and paternal lineages. Beyond diversity studies molecular markers are also used for mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) and within marker assisted selection (MAS). Until recently microsatellites were the markers used for mapping quantitative trait loci for production and functional traits in farm animals (Hiendleder et al., 2003; Kühn et al., 2003) and tightly linked markers are used for marker assisted selection in practise. They are also the prerequisite for the identification of positional and functional candidate genes responsible for quantitative traits. The detailed use of molecular markers for the evaluation of genetic diversity and identification of economically important traits in animal production is presented on the basis of different examples.

Genetic Diversity Evaluation of Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) Ecotypes Using Morphological Traits and Molecular Markers

Genetic diversity of 12 lemon balm ecotypes was evaluated using agronomic traits as well as ISSR and RAPD markers. Results of analysis of variance showed high diversity among the studied ecotypes. Cluster analysis using UPGMA method grouped the ecotypes into three different groups based on the agronomic traits. Twelve ISSR primers created 106 polymorphic bands among the studied ecotypes. An ISS...

Assessment of Genetic Diversity between Different Accessions of Calotropis Procera with ISSR Molecular Markers

The present study was performed to classify and study genetic diversity between Calotropis procera accessions from different regions of Kerman province (Iran) using ISSR markers. In total, DNA from 14 plant samples with nine ISSR primers was amplified by PCR and their banding pattern was obtained. The primers showed acceptable polymorphism (35.93) and minimum and maximum polymorphic information...

Background: Iranin poppy (Papaver bracteatum Lindl.) belongs to Papaveraceae family which has important alkaloids such as thebain. Objective: Investigation of genetic diversity and population structure of Iranian poppy populations from Alborz Mountains. Methods: Total DNA from 36 genotypes (12 individuals from each population) were extracted by doyle method. Thebaine of capsules were assayed...

Genetic Diversity between Bali Cattle (Bos javanicus) and It’s Hybrids Using Microsatellite Markers

The aim of this study was to evaluate the Bali cattle genetic diversity and hybrid cattle using microsatellite markers. Blood samples (n=192) were collected from various cattle breed, i.e. Bali (n=96), Madura (n=48), and Peranakan Ongole (PO) Kebumen (n=48). The microsatellite locus used for assessing the genetic variation was INRA035, ILSTS006, ETH225, and HEL9, while the genetic profile was d...

Genetic Characterization of Hamra Goat Population in Two Different Locations of Morocco Using Microsatellite Markers

In this study, genetic diversity of two different populations of Hamra goat breed of Morocco was investigated in 60 different samples (including 30 from Beni Arouss and 30 from Rommani) using fifteen microsatellite markers. A total of 145 alleles were detected with average number per locus of 8.67 and 8.07 in Beni Arouss and Rommani goats, respectively. The Shannon’s information index ranged fr...

Evaluation of Genetic Diversity in Iranian Violet (Viola spp) Populations Using Morphological and RAPD Molecular Markers

Recognition of genetic reserves and desirable genes is the basis of breeding programs. So far, in Iran, due to the lack of recognition of genetic resources, a considerable breeding program has not been done on native plants. The study of the genetic diversity of violets as a native plant with ornamental and medicinal uses is the great importance in advancing the breeding goals of this plant. So...
